WALNUT STREET RETAIL STUDY
planning + urban design

In conjunction with services related to functional programming and streetscape master planning for Walnut Street, Genus was part of a multi-faceted team retained by the Downtown Partnership and City of Des Moines to examine alternative retail strategies, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and identify steps toward implementation of future retail development within the 8 block corridor. This effort resulted in a graphic ‘brochure’ used to communicate these opportunities to potential investors and national retail representatives.

The project deliverable synthesizes real estate and development data for the corridor within the context of growth projections for downtown Des Moines and the metropolitan region, and makes the case for the creation of a new, vibrant retail district along Walnut Street. Potential public and private redevelopment opportunities are identified, including a multiple-block streetscape enhancement project that aims to create a more pedestrian-focused street environment with spaces for outdoor dining, popup vendors, events, and art installations, the first phase of which was constructed in 2016.
