A MONUMENTAL JOURNEY – KERRY JAMES MARSHALL
planning + urban design

A Monumental Journey, a sculpture by Kerry James Marshall, created an opportunity to interface with the public in an urban plaza. Genus designed the sculpture’s plaza not simply as a place for the art piece, but as a reflection of it. Earth was mounded around the sculpture to nest it firmly into the landscape, and native plantings surround the plaza and change in texture through the seasons. Connections to the river were carefully considered. The plaza itself was pitched to balance drainage needs while holding true to the artist’s vision of a uniform plane where both people and the sculpture could co-exist. Custom etched granite pieces firmly link the sculpture and the plaza.
