The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement, a venue for non-partisan research and outreach around the policy issues to which Senator Tom Harkin devoted his career. Located on Drake’s campus, the building and landscape exemplifies the tenets of Universal Design in the built environment, and was designed so that it can be used and understood to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. Accessible parking was a key design driver for the site, with ADA parking located near each primary building entrance. Stormwater treatment and green infrastructure establish the character and aesthetic of the site, with a series of bioretention cells and native plantings surrounding the Institute. The Harkin Institute is a Green Globes certified project and brings awareness to sustainability in the everyday environment through its thoughtful design.
